Top Five Experiences in New Nat Geo Expeditions Southern Africa Itinerary
January 15, 2025
Get ready, world travelers! National Geographic Expeditions is bringing guests right into the heart of Southern Africa on a brand-new itinerary. Launching in 2026, the nine-day curated expedition will immerse guests into the breathtaking landscapes, legendary wildlife and rich cultures of South Africa and Zambia.
From learning firsthand about the deep traditions of local villagers to safaris on the wildlife-rich savanna and experiencing the majesty of Victoria Falls, this travel experience will give your clients a chance to connect on a deeper level with the region, its people and its natural wonders.
Your clients will gain new perspectives thanks to the authentic storytelling by National Geographic Experts, with extensive backgrounds in fields including wildlife conservation and anthropology, and local guides who will share the history, cultures and food unique to each destination. And with nine days of adventures ahead, this itinerary showcases the stunning beauty of the region while still allowing time for relaxation.
But what makes this trip a must-do? While you’ve probably heard of the notable “Big Five” animals that travelers hope to see during their trip to Africa — the lion, leopard, African elephant, Cape buffalo and rhinoceros – we have our own “Big Five” of the bucket-list experiences included in this itinerary:

1. Captivating Cape Town, South Africa
Deeply rooted in South Africa’s history, ecosystem and dynamic cultures, the vibrant capitol city of Cape Town is the perfect start to your expedition. During your clients' two days in Cape Town, each visit will deepen their understanding of South Africa’s past through immersive storytelling by local experts and guides.
Soak in the city’s beauty by taking an aerial cable car to the top of Table Mountain National Park, a part of the Cape Floral Region Protected Area and UNESCO World Heritage Site, for 360-degree views of the Cape Fold Mountains, Cape Town and the Atlantic Ocean. Experience the unique and vibrant flavors of Cape Malay cuisine in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood before enjoying a tour of Company Gardens, an urban park of historic significance.
A poignant visit to the District Six Museum highlights the impact of Apartheid through the stories of a once-thriving community displaced during this challenging time of conflict.

2. Endangered Encounters on Boulders Beach
Southern Africa is a prime destination for seeing some of the world’s most iconic species. But did you know that also includes penguins?
While exploring Cape Town, the group will visit the Boulders Penguin Colony. Once home to only two breeding pairs of endangered African penguins, the colony has grown to more than 2,200 in recent years due to recovery and rehabilitation efforts protecting Boulders Beach. See their nesting burrows and watch the colony in action as you learn more about these resilient and fascinating creatures from your guide!
3. Safari at Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve
At the renowned Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve located within the Greater Kruger National Park, you’ll be under the expert guidance of rangers and guides for a three-night stay, embarking on unrivaled morning and evening safari experiences. These seasoned professionals will lead you on a quest to spot the “Big Five” among nearly 1,000 other wildlife species that call the savanna home.
At the Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge, you’ll be guided through an exploration of delicious flavors found in South African cuisine while learning about the work Sabi Sabi supports to conserve local culture, improve water access and enhance community education programs.

4. Savor the Breathtaking Beauty of Victoria Falls
Prepare to be awestruck by the grandeur of Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The Smoke that Thunders”). This colossal waterfall is the world’s largest curtain of falling water, stretching more than 5,600 feet wide with an average flow of over 14 million gallons of water per minute from the mighty Zambezi River.
Travelers will enjoy a guided walk into this majestic UNESCO World Heritage Site to discover the breathtaking splendor of the falls from a variety of viewpoints. Your clients may also spot an array of wildlife along the riverbanks of the Zambezi.
5. Mukuni Village Visit
There is no better way to understand a destination than by meeting its people. After exploring Victoria Falls, your clients will visit the working village of Mukuni, where the Leya people have been practicing their customs since the 13th century.
Explore the day-to-day life of the residents, enjoy samples of traditional food and drinks, and learn more about how they are preserving their culture for future generations.
Whether spotting wildlife on safari or learning about the depth of local heritages, each day is designed to give travelers a deeper understanding of Southern Africa.
