With them being so close to the parks, you never really feel like you are out of the Disney bubble - which helped me feel even more safe and secure in the evenings.


6. Utilize Mobile Apps: The My Disney Experience app or Disneyland app will be your digital companion. From mobile food orders to wait times and Genie+ selections, it's a solo traveler's best friend.


7. Document Your Journey: Bring a camera or utilize Disney's PhotoPass service. Just because you're alone doesn't mean you can't capture magical memories. The photo pass was the best part of getting pictures during the trip that were not selfies!


8. Participate in Festivals & Events: EPCOT’s festivals, like the Food & Wine or Flower & Garden, and California Adventure events like the Festival of Holidays, are fantastic for solo travelers. You can sample different cuisines, attend workshops, or simply soak in the ambiance.


9. Dress for the Occasion: Wearing Disney-themed attire or accessories can be a great conversation starter with fellow guests and Cast Members.


10. Relish the Shows & Parades: As a solo traveler, finding space for shows and parades becomes easier. Enjoy these from different perspectives during your trip.

• Rope-drop your favorite park. (This refers to arriving right at opening, a golden window for low wait times.) Security opens about 7:00am for Downtown Disney and 7:15am for the Harbor Entrance. If you're staying on-site your rope drop is 7:30am, gates into Disneyland/California Adventure open about 7:20am and everyone can go in - but park guests not staying on-site don't get rope drop until 8am.


• Ride a couple rides - I like to knock out Fantasyland in the 30 minutes of early entry from staying on-site and then head off to ride other rides at 8am like Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway in ToonTown if I'm at Disneyland.


• Grab breakfast - you could mobile order from a number of locations around the parks or do a sit down breakfast - this could be a way to incorporate a Character Dining if you wanted. I did Storyteller's Cafe at The Grand Californian and having a character breakfast as a solo traveler was a lot of fun!

• Attend a guided tour. Options include 'Behind the Seeds' at EPCOT or 'Keys to the Kingdom' at Magic Kingdom. At Disneyland it could be the 'Disney 100' tour or 'Walt's Main Street Story' tour.


• Enjoy lunch via mobile order or sit-down dining. Sometimes I'll reserve sit down dining, but sometimes I want my day to  be more open and I'll mobile order when I get hungry and whatever I'm in the mood for. Remember for a lot of sit down dining, those reservations can start being made 60 days before your trip - but walk-up is always an option and for solo travelers you might have an easier time!

• Attend a live performance or show. Festival of the Lion King or Finding Nemo – The Musical are great choices.


• Explore quieter attractions or areas. This might be the World Showcase in EPCOT or Tom Sawyer Island in Magic Kingdom. In Disneyland you could use the Afternoon to check out Crush's Turtle Talk or do a drawing at the Art of Animation.

• For dinner this could again be sit-down dining you need to reserve or hope for a walk up, or mobile order whatever you're vibing.


• Watch the nighttime spectacular, grabbing a spot early or watching from a less crowded location.


• Wind down with a nighttime stroll through your resort.

Over the years, I've explored various ways to make this journey—by road, air, and rail. Allow me to share my insights, hoping to make your next trip smoother and more magical.

1. By Road: Driving Down the I-5

The Interstate 5 (I-5) is the most direct route from Oregon to Disneyland, stretching approximately 1,000 miles from Portland to Anaheim. If you're looking for a scenic Pacific coast trip, you can take HWY 101 and HWY 1, but this route is very winding and takes quite a bit longer.

• Duration: Depending on your starting point and the number of stops, it can take 11-18 hours of driving.


• Scenic Detours: For a break, consider stopping at Shasta Lake or the Sundial Bridge in Redding. If you have extra time, a slight detour to the California coast can also be worth it.


• Travel Tip: Leave early in the morning to avoid major city traffic. Also, keep an eye out for rest areas and plan your gas stops to make the journey comfortable.

• Personal Experience: Though I prefer to fly to maximize my time, I have made this drive multiple times. I live on the Oregon coast so I have to head over to I-5 before starting my drive down, but if you've got a good playlist - or good company - it can be a really nice drive. The most recent time I did this drive was Christmas 2022, and it was out of necessity! We had planned to fly, but we had a layover in Seattle and all the flights were getting delayed and cancelled, so the morning we were set to leave I called my airline and they were like it is likely you're flight will be effected, so I opted for a refund, we grabbed snacks and were on our way. Since we were getting a later start, we opted to stop just after Sacramento and then finish the drive the next day - which thankfully was just a hang out day so we didn't lose any park time.

• Airports: Portland International Airport (PDX), Eugene Airport (EUG), and Rouge Valley International Airport - Medford (MFR) offers multiple daily flights to John Wayne Airport (SNA), Long Beach Airport (LGB), and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).


• Duration: Flights typically last between 2 to 3 hours.


• Getting to Disneyland: From SNA, Disneyland is a mere 15-minute drive. From LGB, it's about 25 minutes, and from LAX, it can take 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

• Travel Tip: Consider renting a car or using a shuttle service from the airport. Rideshares like Uber and Lyft are also popular choices. My favorite car services are Lansky and Anaheim Town Car Services - I have used both multiple times and I have always found the drivers to be incredible. I always fly to and from LAX, and it gets a bad rap but I've never had any issues with it - I prefer non-stop flights which limits Oregon travelers to LAX. Because there are so many terminals, security is actually super fast, it usually only takes me 10-15 minutes top to get through TSA and then I grab a coffee and go to wait. I am one of those that gets to the airport many hours ahead of schedule just to be safe.

• Route: The Amtrak Coast Starlight route connects Oregon to Southern California. You'll depart from Portland (or other Oregon stations) and arrive in Los Angeles.


• Duration: The journey is approximately 30 hours, making it the longest option. However, the scenic views of the Pacific coastline, mountains, and forests can be breathtaking.

• Getting to Disneyland: From Los Angeles Union Station, you can take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner or Metrolink's Orange County Line to the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). From there, it's a short ride to Disneyland.


• Travel Tip: If you're considering this route, think about booking a sleeper car for a more comfortable journey. I've ridden the train between Sacramento and Seattle many times and it is stunning, but I haven't done it all the way down to Anaheim before, so I don't have any tips to make it easier.

I’ve been to Disney many times and can say with complete honesty that there is something absolutely special about being there during the Holiday/Christmas season – when I saw the snow on Main Street I just about cried because it was so beautiful.

Café Orleans is a delightful restaurant located in the heart of Disneyland. This popular eatery is known for its delicious food, relaxed atmosphere, and excellent service. Whether you're looking for a quick bite to eat or a leisurely meal with friends and family, Café Orleans is the perfect spot.

One of the standout features of Café Orleans is its location. Situated in New Orleans Square, the restaurant offers a prime view of the Rivers of America and the Mark Twain Riverboat. The outdoor seating area is particularly popular, as it provides a lovely view of the water and the passing boats. The ambiance is enhanced by the sounds of jazz music that drift through the air.

But of course, the real star of the show at Café Orleans is the food. The menu features a variety of Cajun and Creole-inspired dishes, as well as some classic American fare. One of the most popular items is the Monte Cristo sandwich, a Disneyland classic. Currently Café Orleans has two Monte Cristo options, the original and the triple cheese. The original is a deep-fried sandwich filled with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, whereas the triple cheese is filled with Brie, Swiss, and Mozzarella cheeses. Both are dusted with powdered sugar, and it's served with a side of berry puree for dipping, which adds a sweet and tangy flavor to these savory sandwiches.

Another must-try dish is the gumbo, a hearty and flavorful soup made with chicken, sausage, and vegetables, served with rice. The jambalaya, a spicy rice dish with shrimp, chicken, andouille sausage, and vegetables, is also a favorite. And for those looking for a lighter option, the salad with jumbo shrimp and the vegetarian gumbo are both excellent choices.

You could also hop aboard one of the tow tractors at Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, and hold on tight as you become part of Mater's musical adventure. The tractors are hitched to trailers, and as the music starts playing, the tractors take on a life of their own, swinging and swaying to the catchy tunes. The experience is akin to a square dance with a Cars Land twist.

The outside of the mansion is stunning, with lots to see and take in while you are in the queue. Then the famous stretching room reveals a new set of portraits, featuring characters from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' intertwined with classic Disney characters. Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, takes center stage, overseeing the holiday festivities in his own mischievous style. Encounters with iconic characters such as Sally, Oogie Boogie, and Zero, the ghost dog, add an extra layer of charm to the Haunted Mansion Holiday Overlay. The ride seamlessly merges elements from the original Haunted Mansion attraction with the beloved characters and motifs from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas,' resulting in a one-of-a-kind experience that captivates both young and old.
