Tipping in Europe: A Guide for Travelers

Tipping is an important part of the travel experience, but it can vary significantly from country to country. While in some places, tipping is an expected way to show appreciation for service, in others, it’s less of a custom—or even not required. Europe, with its rich tapestry of cultures, has diverse tipping practices that can leave travelers wondering how much to tip (or whether to tip at all).

To help you navigate the nuances of tipping across the continent, we’ve put together a practical guide to tipping in Europe. Whether you're dining in Paris, taking a taxi in Barcelona, or staying at a hotel in Rome, here's everything you need to know.

1. General Guidelines for Tipping in Europe

Before we dive into country-specific practices, it's important to note a few general principles that apply across much of Europe:

  • Service Charges Are Often Included: In many European countries, a service charge (sometimes called 'service compris' in French or 'servizio incluso' in Italian) is already included in the bill, especially in restaurants. This means tipping is optional, but still appreciated for good service.

  • Cash Is King: While many establishments now accept credit cards, tipping in cash is often the preferred method for waitstaff and other service workers. It’s considered more personal and ensures the person who served you gets the tip directly.

  • Small Amounts: In general, tips in Europe tend to be smaller compared to those in the U.S. The culture in most European countries doesn’t revolve around big gratuities, so it’s more about showing appreciation with modest amounts.

2. Tipping in Specific European Countries

France

  • Restaurants: In France, a service charge (usually around 15%) is typically included in the bill. You’ll see “service compris” listed on the receipt, meaning the tip is already factored in. However, if you received exceptional service, it’s customary to leave a small additional tip (around €1-2 per person or rounding up the bill). In more casual settings like cafes or bistros, leaving a few coins as a tip is appreciated.

  • Taxis: For taxis, rounding up to the nearest euro is common. If the driver helped with luggage or provided extra service, a tip of around 5-10% is appropriate.

  • Hotels: For hotel staff, it's customary to leave around €1-2 per night for the housekeeping staff. If the bellhop helps with your luggage, a tip of €1-2 per bag is standard.

Italy

  • Restaurants: Similar to France, Italy often includes a service charge in the bill. However, in restaurants, it’s polite to leave a small tip (around 5-10%) if service was good. For coffee at a bar, tipping isn’t necessary, but rounding up to the nearest euro is common.

  • Taxis: In taxis, rounding up to the nearest euro or leaving a tip of 5-10% is typical. If the driver goes above and beyond, such as helping with luggage or offering tips on where to visit, you can leave a bit more.

  • Hotels: It’s customary to leave €1-2 per night for housekeeping. For bellhops, €1-2 per bag is appreciated. If you’re staying in a more luxurious hotel, you might consider leaving a larger tip for exceptional service.

Spain

  • Restaurants: In Spain, the service charge is usually included in the bill, but it’s still polite to leave a small tip—usually about 5-10% for good service. For tapas or drinks at a bar, it’s common to leave a couple of euros or just round up the bill.

  • Taxis: For taxi rides, rounding up the fare to the nearest euro is generally enough. If you’ve had a particularly pleasant experience, a 5-10% tip is appreciated.

  • Hotels: Similar to Italy, €1-2 per night for housekeeping is typical, and €1-2 per bag for bellhops. If the hotel staff has helped with reservations or given extra assistance, a higher tip may be in order.

Germany

  • Restaurants: In Germany, the service charge is usually not included, but it’s common to leave a tip of 5-10%. A good rule of thumb is to round the bill up or leave 5-10% for good service. Tipping is typically done in cash.

  • Taxis: A tip of 5-10% is standard for taxi rides, although rounding up to the nearest euro is also common.

  • Hotels: Tip €1-2 per night for housekeeping, and around €1-2 per bag for bellhops.

United Kingdom

  • Restaurants: In the UK, a service charge of 10-12.5% is often included in the bill, particularly in higher-end establishments. If no service charge is included, a tip of 10-15% is typical for good service. It’s important to check your bill, as some restaurants have a policy of not adding service charges.

  • Taxis: Tipping taxi drivers around 10-15% of the fare is customary. Round up the fare if it’s a short ride.

  • Hotels: Tip £1-2 per night for housekeeping, and around £1 per bag for bellhops. If the concierge provides special services, like making dinner reservations or offering tours, you might want to tip a little more.

Greece

  • Restaurants: In Greece, it’s common to leave a tip of around 5-10% if the service charge is not included. In more casual establishments like tavernas, rounding up the bill or leaving a few euros is appreciated.

  • Taxis: For taxis, rounding up the fare is standard. A tip of 5-10% is common for longer journeys.

  • Hotels: €1-2 per night for housekeeping and €1 per bag for bellhops is typical. If the staff has gone above and beyond, you might want to leave a bit more.

Switzerland

  • Restaurants: In Switzerland, service charges are typically included in the bill, but it’s still customary to leave a tip of around 5-10% for good service. If you’ve received exceptional service, a larger tip is appreciated.

  • Taxis: Tipping is not compulsory in Switzerland, but rounding up to the nearest franc or leaving a tip of about 5% is polite.

  • Hotels: Tip around CHF 2-3 per night for housekeeping, and CHF 1-2 per bag for bellhops.

Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic)

  • Restaurants: In countries like Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. It’s common to leave a tip of around 5-10% of the bill if service is not included.

  • Taxis: A tip of around 5-10% for taxi drivers is customary.

  • Hotels: €1-2 per night for housekeeping is typical, and €1-2 per bag for bellhops is common.

3. Tipping for Other Services

  • Tour Guides: If you’ve had a guided tour (walking, bus, or private), it’s customary to tip the guide around €5-10 per person, depending on the length of the tour and the quality of the service.

  • Concierge: In high-end hotels, you may want to tip the concierge if they’ve helped you with special requests or bookings. A tip of €5-10 is generally appropriate.

  • Hairdressers/Spas: A tip of 5-10% is typical for hairdressers, massage therapists, or spa attendants.

4. Tips for Tipping Etiquette in Europe

  • Check Your Bill: Always check your bill to see if a service charge is included. In some countries, a service charge is mandatory, and leaving extra is not necessary.

  • Tip Directly: In many places, it’s best to hand the tip directly to the person who served you, especially in restaurants or taxis.

  • Small Bills Are Key: Carry small denominations of cash for tipping. It's easier to leave a couple of euros or a small tip in local currency than deal with larger bills.

  • Consider the Local Culture: Some countries in Europe, like France and Italy, appreciate small tips or rounding up, while in others, like Germany and the UK, tipping is more formal and expected for good service.

Conclusion

Tipping in Europe varies from country to country, but the general principle remains the same: it’s a way to show appreciation for good service. While some countries include service charges in the bill, it’s always a nice gesture to leave a little extra if the service was exceptional. Being aware of the local tipping customs will help you avoid any awkward situations and ensure that your appreciation for the hard work of servers, drivers, and hotel staff is well understood.

So, next time you’re in a charming cafe in Paris, taking a gondola ride in Venice, or enjoying a traditional meal in Spain, remember to tip appropriately for the local customs—and enjoy the warm gratitude that follows! Let's book Europe!
