I recently sailed aboard Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth on a 7-night Alaska cruise round trip from Seattle, and as a travel advisor, I was excited to experience the ship for myself.

There is only so much I can learn from deck plans, brochures and training. Sailing on a ship gives me a much better understanding of the experience—and, most importantly, who will love it and who might be happier on another cruise line.

My biggest takeaway? Queen Elizabeth feels different from many of today’s cruise ships.  She’s classic and elegant without feeling stuffy. Our sailing was at 100% guest capacity with approximately 2,000 guests onboard, yet the ship rarely felt crowded.

Here’s what stood out to me—the good, the not-so-good, and a few things I think are helpful to know before sailing.

First Impressions of Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth is beautiful, classic and elegant.  Rather than filling every available space with another attraction or venue, the ship has plenty of comfortable areas to sit, read, talk, listen to music or simply watch the ocean or the people.

Even at full capacity, the ship rarely felt crowded. For me, that was one of Queen Elizabeth’s biggest pluses. Luxury isn’t always about marble, champagne and butlers. Sometimes it’s simply having room to breathe.

The ship was also remarkably easy to navigate, which matters to me because my internal sense of direction is not exactly one of my strengths. I only got lost trying to find our stateroom once all week!

One of My Favorite Spaces: The Library

It spans two levels, connected by a beautiful spiral staircase, and contains more than 6,000 books guests can check out during the cruise.

This is one of those signature Cunard touches that doesn’t necessarily make the list of flashy cruise-ship amenities, but I think it’s part of what makes the experience so special.

Another favorite was the card room. Throughout the week, we saw people working on puzzles, playing Mahjong and enjoying card games.  On Gala Night, we were dressed for the evening and had some time before the show, so we joined other guests working on a puzzle. Elegant, but comfortable—a little moment sums up much of the Cunard experience.

What Is Cunard’s White Star Service?

You hear the term White Star Service frequently when researching Cunard, but what does that mean when you’re onboard?

Cunard trains its crew through its White Star Academy, with an emphasis on thoughtful, attentive service and anticipating guests’ needs.

For me, White Star Service wasn’t about someone hovering over us or making the experience overly formal. It was the little things.  Our dining team remembered our preferences after just a couple of evenings. Crew members were available when we needed something without constantly inserting themselves into our experience. The service felt polished and professional, but genuinely friendly.

The service was present without being intrusive. We felt taken care of while still being left alone to enjoy our vacation.

For an Alaska cruise, I highly recommend having a balcony—but I’ll share much more about why in my separate Alaska cruise review.

My assessment of the room itself is that there was “enough” space for two adults for a week. It wasn’t huge, but we were comfortable.

Closet space was plentiful, and we stored our empty luggage in the closet and under the bed. Drawer space, however, was fairly limited.

One pleasant surprise was the hair dryer. Anyone who has used some of the older cruise-ship hair dryers knows what I'm talking about! The one Cunard provided worked really well, and I was happy I hadn’t packed my own.

The One Area That Needs an Update: The Bathroom

The biggest downside of our stateroom was definitely the bathroom.

Unlike newer ships, the shower still has a shower curtain rather than a solid door. Counter space is very limited, and the sink is quite small.  Would I have preferred an updated bathroom? Absolutely. Did it detract from our overall experience? No. We made it work, and it certainly wouldn’t prevent me from sailing Queen Elizabeth again.

 

Dining in the Britannia Restaurant

We had early seating in the Britannia Restaurant, and I really enjoyed traditional assigned dining.

Having the same waiter, assistant waiter and bar attendant each evening was a highlight. They quickly learned our preferences, and we enjoyed getting to know them throughout the week.

Overall, I thought the food was better than what I experienced on my most recent Princess cruise, with one notable exception: seafood.  We didn’t have great luck with the seafood dishes onboard, so after a couple of tries, we learned to choose something else. If fresh seafood is important to you, I’d save that experience for a meal in port—or even better, a food-focused shore excursion.

The desserts surprised me in the opposite direction. Cruise desserts often look much better than they taste. Not this week! The desserts on Queen Elizabeth were consistently very good.

Cunard’s Alternative Dining: Here’s How It Actually Works

Cunard refers to its additional-fee dining options as “alternative dining.” If you’re familiar with  specialty dining on other cruise lines, this is essentially Cunard’s term for the same concept: restaurants and dining experiences that are not included in your standard cruise fare and come with an additional charge.

I’ll admit, Cunard’s setup can be a little confusing when you’re researching it online.  Not all of its alternative dining restaurants have their own dedicated venue, and not all are open every evening.

Steakhouse at The Verandah is the ship’s only dedicated alternative dining restaurant with its own permanent location.

The other alternative dining experiences work more like “pop-up” restaurants, which is the easiest way to think about them. On select evenings, Cunard transforms part of the Lido—the ship’s buffet restaurant—into a sit-down alternative dining venue while the other portion continues operating as the buffet. Different concepts rotate throughout the voyage, including cuisines such as Italian, Indian and seafood. These experiences also carry an additional charge.

This is a perfect example of how working with a travel advisor who has personally experienced the ship can make a difference. Once I experienced the setup firsthand, it made perfect sense.  Now I can explain it and help my clients know what to expect before they board.

Would I Pay for the specialty dining steakhouse Again?

Probably not.  We tried The Veranda one evening.  It comes with the largest per person upcharge of all of the Alternative Dining options.  My husband ordered the filet and enjoyed it. I ordered the strip steak, which unfortunately was tough and didn’t have much flavor.  I did really enjoy the bone marrow appetizer, though!

On my next Cunard cruise, I will skip the steakhouse. If I’m craving a really good filet, I’d rather pay for the steak upgrade offered in the main dining room.

One thing that surprised me was how easy it was to dine where we wanted. Even though our sailing was at 100% guest capacity, we never had trouble getting a dining reservation when we wanted one.

Don’t Overlook the Golden Lion Pub.  We had dinner there one evening and thought the fish and chips and the Golden Lion Burger were excellent.  There are a few options on the menu that have an additional charge, the burger being one.  In our opinion, it was definitely it.  The Golden Lion is going on my list for my next Cunard sailing.  I definitely need to try the Michel Roux Signature Three Cheese Toastie!

What About the Buffet?

We tried The Lido Restaurant (Cunard's buffet) for breakfast, lunch and dinner at least once during the week.  This was the only place on Queen Elizabeth that consistently felt crowded, although it was still nowhere near as hectic as buffets I’ve experienced on some larger ships.

The selection was adequate, but the biggest weakness was variety. We didn’t see much change from one day to the next.  If you prefer eating most of your cruise meals at the buffet, that’s something I’d keep in mind. For us, it wasn’t a major issue because we preferred dining elsewhere.

Let’s Talk About the Cunard Dress Code

One of the biggest myths about sailing Cunard is that the dress code is stuffy and formal all day, every day.

That couldn’t have been farther from our experience.

During the day, dress is appropriate to the destination. Sailing the Caribbean? Shorts and warm-weather clothes are perfectly normal. Sailing Alaska like we were? Comfortable layers, jeans and warmer casual clothing fit right in.

In other words, you do not need to walk around Queen Elizabeth dressed for Afternoon Tea all day.

What Do You Wear to Dinner on Cunard?

On regular evenings, I would compare dressing for dinner on Queen Elizabeth to going out to a nice restaurant at home.

We saw slacks, chinos, dresses and skirts, with shirts ranging from button-downs and collared shirts to nicer, plain smart-casual T-shirts.

You look put together. You don’t need to look like you’re attending a wedding.

Gala Evenings Are a Little Different

Gala Evenings are where Cunard’s reputation for dressing up comes from—and yes, they are dressier.  After 6 p.m., guests in many of the main public areas, including the dining rooms, Queens Room and theater, are encouraged to embrace the evening’s more formal atmosphere.

I use the word “formal-ish” because there is still room for personal interpretation. You’ll see guests in tuxedos and evening gowns, while plenty of others interpret formal in a more understated way.

In our increasingly casual world, I found myself looking forward to dressing up a couple of times during the week. It made the evening feel special.

There are some expectations in the dining rooms.  Jackets and collared shirts for gentlemen are required. But Cunard really does try to make it easy. If a gentleman arrives without an appropriate jacket, Cunard keeps some available to loan right at the dining room entrance.  Quite literally, Cunard has your back.

What If You Don’t Want to Dress Up?

This is probably the part I most want my clients considering Cunard to know:  You don’t have to participate.

If you don’t want to pack dressier clothing or simply don’t feel comfortable in that environment, there are areas of the ship where casual clothing remains perfectly acceptable—even on Gala Evenings. You can still have dinner and enjoy your evening without putting on formalwear.

I know the dress code can make some travelers hesitant to try Cunard because they worry the experience will feel too restrictive. That simply wasn’t my experience.  Cunard gives you the opportunity to embrace the elegance and tradition when you want to, while still providing options when you don’t.

Cunard is classy and sometimes wonderfully elegant, but never felt stuffy or judgmental.

Entertainment on Cunard Is Different—and I Loved That

If your favorite cruise-night activity is watching a movie on a giant screen by the pool, you won’t find that experience here. But there is plenty to do in the evenings, and I really enjoyed Cunard’s approach to entertainment.

Cunard is the Official Cruise Partner of the Tony Awards, which makes sense when you see the emphasis the cruise line places on theater and live performance.  During our sailing, we saw Come From Away.

Seeing a Broadway production with that level of talent at sea was an enjoyable experience.  The cast was so talented, and other than an occasional sway of the ship, you would think we were in a NYC Broadway theater.

What I enjoyed just as much was the overall style of entertainment.  The entertainment team was talented, knowledgeable and friendly without being “in your face.” There wasn’t a constant push to create bigger, louder, more energetic activities.

No belly-flop contests. No awkward dating shows. No uncomfortable dance competitions.  For me, that was refreshing.

Cunard also has professional ballroom dancers onboard, and watching them became one of my favorite things to do. It took me right back to my own theater and dancing days.  They offer dance lessons during the day as well. We didn’t participate this time, but it's already on my list for our next Cunard cruise.

Who Will Love Queen Elizabeth?

After spending a week onboard, I don’t think Cunard is trying to be the cruise line for everyone—and that’s one of its strengths.

I think Queen Elizabeth is particularly well suited for travelers who appreciate:

• A smaller, less crowded ship experience


• Classic elegance rather than flashy attractions


• Attentive service and getting to know the same dining team


• Live music, theater, ballroom dancing and enrichment


• Quiet spaces to read, relax or have a conversation


• Traditional cruise experiences such as Gala Evenings


• Entertainment without constant hype or pressure to participate


• Having time to actually enjoy the ship

Kauai surprised me — in the best possible way.

I first visited the Garden Isle nearly 20 years ago when my kids were young. It was March, it was cold and rainy, and my memories were mostly gray skies and soggy beach towels. If you’ve ever been to Maui—or are planning your very first vacation to this beautiful Hawaiian island—you may have heard about the iconic Mama’s Fish House.

Located on the north shore of Maui in Paia, Hawaii, Mama’s Fish House is about 20 minutes from Kahului Airport and sits right at the beginning of the famous Road to Hana. If you're staying in Wailea, expect about a 45-minute drive. If you're based in Ka’anapali, plan for roughly an hour on the road.

Mama’s Fish House got its start in the 1960s, thanks to the Christenson family and their first trip to Maui. When they opened the restaurant at its current location in 1973, most dining options on the island were steakhouses. They wanted guests to know that they served primarily fish.  Not only fish, but LOCAL fish.  Soon after, a loyal following began, and now some 50 years later, the restaurant is not only iconic, but very popular, and in my opinion worth a visit.

Over the past 50 years, Mama’s has developed a loyal following and has become one of Maui’s most popular and iconic restaurants.

We visited Mama’s most recently in February 2025. We were lucky enough to snag a reservation at 2:20 p.m.  about a week before our arrival. Typically, reservations fill up six months in advance, so be sure to book yours as soon

I recommend a reservation before the sun goes down.  The area is so beautiful, you won’t want to miss seeing any of it.  I also recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before your reservation.  Photo opportunities are endless, and you don’t want to feel rushed.

Something you need to know ahead of time.  Mama’s Fish House is expensive.  Dining anywhere in Hawaii is going to be a bit pricey, but you’ll need to find a little extra in your budget for a meal here.  Our meal (two people) came to $300 including tip. We each enjoyed:  A mocktail, appetizer,  main dish, and we shared a dessert.  We didn’t splurge on the most expensive items but didn’t hold back either.

Many people might gasp at the cost—and understandably so—but if you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a truly memorable and  upscale Hawaiian dining experience, Mama’s is absolutely worth the splurge.

3 of My Favorite Things About Mama's Fish House

*The fish is incredibly fresh and delicious. The menu is printed daily and adjusted for the catches they received that day.  They tell you exactly where the fish was caught.  The chefs really know what they are doing.  Everything is cooked to perfection and presented in impeccable fashion.  My all-time favorite dish is the fish collar.  Think of it like a seafood version of bone-in chicken wings.  It varies depending on what they catch, and always delicious.

Why use a travel advisor when traveling during hurricane season?

I am currently sitting on my hotel room in Clearwater, Florida.  We were supposed to be in Jamaica right now, but Hurricane Beryl is headed for a direct hit.  So...we changed our plans.  (The biggest red island in the picture is Jamaica--currently under a hurricane warning.)

But that's not the point of this post.

I have clients in Cancun right now.  (See the pink line on the map, which is currently a hurricane watch for The Yucatan.)  They arrived on Sunday and have been having a fabulous time as a family.  They are supposed to leave for home on Friday...the same day Hurricane Beryl is supposed to hit the Cancun area.

My clients were wise and purchased travel insurance.  If they do face cancellations or long delays, their additional expenses will be reimbursed.  Knowing that is helping them to be proactive.

As the storm's path has been developing, I've been watching.  This morning, while they are enjoying their vacation, I booked them new flights home on Saturday.  They now have a guaranteed way home if things get dicey on Friday and their original flights get canceled.  Flights are always the hardest part in situations like these.  We will get them an extra night at the hotel when we know more.

If they are able to leave as scheduled, they will have flight credit to use on future travel.  If they get stuck, they have flights home and won't have to wait in endlessly long lines at the Cancun airport.

All this done while they enjoy a snorkel trip as a family.  They aren't scrambling trying to figure things out.  I'm sure there is some stress regarding the unknown, but for now, they are OK.

This is what I do as your travel advisor.  Even when I'm on vacation myself!

Jamaica!!  It's a place where the sun dances on the turquoise waves, where the air is filled with the rhythm of reggae, and every moment feels like paradise!

I absolutely love this gem of the Caribbean and think everyone should vacation here at least once in their lives.

The Convenience:  Getting to Jamaica from DFW couldn't be easier.  There are  regular flights, many non-stop,  between Dallas Airports (DFW or DAL) and the MBJ International Airport. Whether you're planning a quick weekend getaway or a longer escape, you'll find that Jamaica is an easy flight away.  The convenience makes it the perfect destination for spontaneous adventures, indulgent honeymoons, destination weddings, anniversary trips and more.

The Safety:  While no one can guarantee a trouble-free vacation, tourist safety is a top priority here.  Tourism is the countries largest industry, and therefore they have many dedicated efforts to ensure that visitors feel secure and well-cared for throughout their stay. Jamaica goes above and beyond to see that your vacation is worry-free and filled with nothing but the best memories.  It is essential for travelers to exercise typical caution and be mindful of their surroundings.  Keep with reputable guided tours, avoid sketchy areas (especially at night), and enjoy the many amenities offered at your resort.

In January 2023, I left my Corporate America job after 15+ years.  I traded accounting for adventure, and began my new career as an Independent Travel Advisor with Vincent Vacations.  Our first adventure in my new life was a biggie!  My husband and I planned a 2-week trip to Thailand to celebrate my new opportunities.  I would go back in a minute, with several things I'd do again.

Here are my top 5 Thailand adventures that will hopefully inspire you to take the leap and plan your Bucket List Adventure.

#5 - Food:  Thai food is one of my all-time favorite cuisines.  So much flavor and so many options.  Pad Thai in Thailand is 1000 times better than what you can get in the US, and I love our local Thai restaurants!  Other favorites: Thai lobster, mango sticky rice, pork skewers and Thai basil chicken.  We found inexpensive meat on a stick at the night markets to eggs, rice and chili for breakfast from 7-11.  We dined in more luxury at  The House of Smooth Curry (one of the many restaurants at The Athenee Hotel in Bangkok).  Some of our favorites were the locally recommended places that didn't look like much, but the flavors were fantastic, like Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken in Bangkok.

#4 - Temples:  We explored so many beautiful Buddhist Temples.  What resonated the most with me was the detailed artistry that was done centuries ago.  From Wat Phra Kaew (home of the Emerald Buddha) and Wat Pho (home of the largest reclining Buddha) in Bangkok, to Wat Chiang Man (the oldest temple in Chiang Mai) and Wat Saen Muang Ma Luang (at hidden gem in Old City) in Chiang Mai, I was in awe.   Pictures are beautiful, but to really appreciate the temples, you must visit in person.

#3 - Night markets:  Southeast Asia is known for it's lively night markets.  Stall after stall, and a sea of patrons strolling through--there's nothing like it.  You can find dinner & dessert, get a pedicure, buy a new wardrobe, and mingle with locals and tourists alike.  We went to several, and our favorite was Jodd Fairs market.  Next time, I promise I'll eat the scorpion on a stick!

#2 - Elephant Sanctuary:  While in Phuket, we visited the The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary.  While people back home were watching the Super Bowl, we were spending the day with 3 gentle giants.  We fed them, scrubbed them with mud, and rinsed them off in their own private swimming hole.  Do your research!  You want to pick a sanctuary with high humane standards. NEVER RIDE AN ELEPHANT!

#1 - Islands and Beaches:  There is no shortage of beautiful beaches in Thailand.  Our first beach stop was the lively and popular Patong Beach in Phuket.  It felt a lot like Honolulu--lots of people, lots of activities, and so much to see within walking distance of almost anywhere.  Our last beach stop was Koh Samui.  We saw the Angthong Marine Park limestone islands up close on a semi-private tour that included snorkeling, kayaking, and the most fabulous sunset.  Highly recommend!

1. Do not rent a car.
   
   Amsterdam has a robust and easy to navigate mass transit system.  The GVB transit system offers metro trains, buses, and trams.  Purchase a ticket based on the number of days you will be in the area.  For example, a 3-day ticket is 21 euros and is valid for unlimited travel on all routes for 72 hours from your first check in.
   
   Follow the maps located near each stop, and you’ll be able to navigate to within a couple blocks of your destination. Apple and Google maps include the mass transit routes as well.
   
   


2. Do not stop in the bike lanes.
   
   Amsterdam has approximately 2 bikes per capita.  With approximately 900,000 residents, that is a lot of bicycles!  The infrastructure is designed to give bike riders their own path on almost every street.  So, you will find sidewalk, bike lane, car lane (and often tram tracks as well) in each direction of traffic flow. 
   
   The bike lanes are additionally marked with red pavement.  And…bicycles have the right of way, not pedestrians.  So, stay alert, keep your head on a swivel, and don’t stop in the bike lane.
   
   


3. Do not miss out on Dutch pancakes.
   
   Amsterdam isn’t what I would call a foodie capital of the world.  There are a few things they are known for in Amsterdam:  frites, stroopwafel, bitterballen, kaasstengels, and Gouda to name a few.  The top of the list for me was the dutch pancake.  I was expecting the puffy pancake with the tall sides in a cast-iron skillet known to me as the Dutch baby.
   
   The real Dutch pancake is about the size of a medium pizza and thin – somewhere just beyond a crepe on its way to an American pancake.  Served plain, savory, or sweet and served for breakfast, lunch, and maybe even dinner, you can find them all over the city.
   
   


4. Don’t try to keep track of all the beautiful canals.
   
   When you first arrive by metro, you’ll be greeted by the River IJ (pronounced “eye”) at Amsterdam Centraal.  Pushing deeper into the city, you’ll find the intricate canal network which, quite literally, keeps the city from sinking!  As you walk around this part of Amsterdam, at almost every turn you will find a bridge over a beautiful canal. 
   
   Embrace it, and take pictures of them all.
   
     Pretty soon, you’ll be saying to your travel companions, “oh look! Another beautiful canal”.  Your camera roll will thank you later.
   
   


5. Don’t miss the Anne Frank House and the Van Gough Museums.
   
   Plan ahead and stay aware of when tickets initially go on sale for your dates.  If you arrive in Amsterdam without a ticket, you will likely miss out. 
   
   Anne Frank House tickets: 
   
   Every Tuesday, the Anne Frank House releases tickets for the following 6 weeks and tickets are 16 euros for an adult ticket.  A 30-minute introductory program is an additional 7 euros, and well worth it!  The Van Gough museum tickets can be purchased online at any time, but likely sell out anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks in advance.  There are many other museums in the city where tickets are easier to get within a few days of your visit, and all are fantastic.  But if Anne Frank and Van Gough are on your must-do list (and they should be!), mark your calendars and purchase in advance.
   
   

Imagine it's two days after your wedding day.  You've planned that special day for several months, if not a year or more.  Everything goes off without a hitch.  You're surrounded by those you love and who love you to start your new life as Mr. & Mrs.

You planned your honeymoon with a professional travel advisor, and have been working on the details for a few months.  Passports are in order, airline tickets and 5-star all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean is confirmed and paid for.  Sunscreen and swimsuits are packed.

You have multiple flights to get to your honeymoon, and everything starts out OK.  The flight to JFK leaves the gate on time, but then sits on the runway for what feels like forever and you arrive late.  You are in main cabin, so have to wait for everyone to get off the plane before you can start your sprint to another terminal.  When you arrive at the connection gate, they've already closed the doors, and now you've missed the flight!

Panic sets in.  The crew at the airport are not super helpful, and you are getting a little frustrated.  But...you have a travel advisor!  You call her.  She calms you down a little bit and starts to make calls to find out all of the options.  She talks you through getting on stand-by for the first flight out the next day.  She helps talk you through planning to file a travel protection claim when you get home (keep your receipts!!!).  She finds a hotel and is able to extend your stay with the resort.  You get an unscheduled night in New York City and get to explore a bit.  You get a good night sleep, make it to the airport early, and are fortunate enough to get on the flight.

What you initially thought was going to be disaster and ruin your dream honeymoon turns into a couple bumps in the road along the way.  Your travel advisor not only has helped navigate the challenges, but she's reduced the stress at least a little bit.

Without the travel advisor to assist, you would have been left to figure things out on your own.  Having someone to advocate for you can make a difference.  It's worth it!!
