Want to experience the European Christmas Markets but don’t know the travel style you’d prefer? I’m here to help!
Hi, I’m Ashley, a Travel Agent, European Specialist and Christmas Market Enthusiast.
I'm going to let you in on a little secret : River Cruises are not only for people of a certain age any more! There are many River Cruise Lines that offer different activity levels and aesthetics.
Trying to decide the best way to visit the European Christmas Markets depends on a few things : Destination Wish List, Length Time Spent in Each City & Budget!
(Let’s be honest, these points work well for any vacation to Europe.)
Destination Wish List
Where do you want to visit?
Cologne, Germany? Vienna, Austria? Budapest, Hungary? Both of these are river cruise ports, but also great to visit for longer stays. Reach out to me to find out if your desired destinations are a river cruise port.
If you have cities on your wish list that are not a river cruise port, well then it’s pretty clear that hotel stay would be your pick.
Length of Time in Each CityHow many cities would you like to visit on your Christmas Market adventure?
River Cruises are great for those who want to see multiple towns in one trip without packing and unpacking every night! It is also a great way to see smaller towns you might now have considered, along with a relaxing journey in between. Most River cruises sail at night, with occasional day sailings through picturesque regions (such as the Rhine Valley with 30+ castles overlooking the River). Since you are visiting so multiple destinations during your sailing, you will have less time at each port.
If you prefer to spend a few days exploring cities, then a hotel stay may be the way to go! For independent travel, I suggest a minimum of 3 nights/2 full days in a city to explore, but more if you’d like a more leisurely vacation. Want to see multiple cities? The rail systems in Europe are fantastic, so moving between cities can be very simple.
Budget & Flexibility
For some, budget may play a large part in how they travel. Hotel stays can sometimes be a more economical option, depending on your level of luxury. It is also a more flexible option, as you’re not tied to sailing dates.
Though river cruising can have a higher price point than independent travel, there are many cruise lines with varying levels of stateroom categories and inclusions available. Beer & wine is included at lunch and dinner on most ships. Some cruise lines offer some or all excursions, while others have a lower price point and offer excursion packages.
