There are trips that you take to see new places, and then there are trips you take to make memories that will last a lifetime. This Mom & Son adventure was definitely the latter.

Our journey began in the historic city of Boston, where we spent time exploring before boarding the beautiful Holland America Line Zuiderdam. From the moment we stepped onboard, we knew we were in for an incredible adventure as we sailed through New England and Eastern Canada, ending in the charming city of Quebec City.

Exploring New England & Canada

Each port offered something unique and gave us the opportunity to experience the history, culture, and natural beauty of the region.

In Boston, we enjoyed a hop-on, hop-off trolley tour, visited the famous Cheers neighborhood, walked through beautiful Beacon Hill, toured the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, and watched the city from the harbor before beginning our cruise.



Our first port was Portland, Maine, where we visited the iconic Portland Head Light. Seeing one of the most photographed lighthouses in America overlooking the rocky coastline was the perfect introduction to New England.





As we continued north, we were fortunate enough to spot whales and even dolphins from the ship—a reminder that sometimes the best moments happen when you least expect them.

Halifax, Nova Scotia welcomed us with its waterfront charm, historic sites, and local shops, while Sydney, Nova Scotia introduced us to Cape Breton’s rich history and the famous World’s Largest Fiddle.



One of my favorite stops was Prince Edward Island. Even though the weather included a little “liquid sunshine,” it didn’t dampen our spirits. We explored the island’s breathtaking coastline, visited Green Gables Heritage Place, learned about Acadian history, admired the island’s famous red cliffs, and of course enjoyed some delicious COWS Ice Cream.



Relaxing at Sea

Sea days quickly became some of our favorites. They gave us the chance to slow down and simply enjoy being together.

We spent time swimming, relaxing on the Lido Deck, enjoying afternoon tea, reading in the Crow’s Nest, participating in onboard activities, watching for whales, and even treating ourselves to a massage. One of the most unforgettable moments came during our final sea day as we sailed up the beautiful St. Lawrence River. We were lucky enough to spot a beluga whale—a memory we’ll both cherish for years to come.



Our Final Stop: Quebec City

Our cruise concluded in one of North America’s most beautiful cities—Quebec City.

Before flying home, we took a tour through the historic streets of Old Quebec, admired centuries-old architecture, and visited the breathtaking Montmorency Falls. Of course, every great adventure seems to need one unexpected story. Our tour bus blew a tire before reaching the iconic Fairmont Château Frontenac! Determined not to miss our chance for one last photo, we quickly grabbed an Uber, made it to the hotel, snapped our pictures, and then headed to the airport.



Looking back now, that little detour just became another fun memory to add to the trip.

More Than Just a Vacation

As a travel advisor, I’m fortunate to visit incredible destinations around the world. But this trip reminded me that travel isn’t just about checking places off a bucket list. It’s about slowing down, spending quality time with the people you love, sharing new experiences, and creating memories that will last forever.

Watching whales together, exploring historic cities, laughing through unexpected travel hiccups, and simply enjoying uninterrupted time together made this trip incredibly special.

These are the moments that matter.

This one began long before I ever saw ice

Before the Ice: Anticipation in the South

The adventure started in rainy, charming Buenos Aires, where I allowed myself to slow down—good food, quiet moments, and the kind of anticipation that hums beneath the surface when something extraordinary is just ahead. From there, I traveled to Ushuaia, the end of the world, where excitement and gratitude met as I stepped aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen.

My seventh continent was no longer a dream. It was becoming real.





Crossing the Drake: A Passage Into Another World

The Drake Passage, legendary for its unpredictability, greeted us gently. Albatross glided beside the ship with wings stretched wide, petrels danced across the waves, and whales surfaced in the distance, their breaths rising like punctuation marks on the sea.

Even the fog and shifting forecasts felt meaningful—like a rite of passage, signaling that we were leaving the familiar behind and entering a different realm altogether.





First Sight of Antarctica: A Sacred Arrival

Then came the moment I will carry with me forever.

I opened my balcony curtains at dawn and there it was—Antarctica.

Snow-draped mountains rose from the sea. Icebergs drifted silently past the ship. A soft sunrise cast golden light across a frozen world that felt untouched and ancient. It didn’t feel like arriving somewhere new; it felt like being invited into something sacred.

I stood there quietly, knowing this was a moment that would never fully fit into words.





Days of Wonder: Ice, Wildlife, and Stillness

Each day unfolded with a sense of quiet awe.

Zodiac cruises carried us through glassy bays where the ice shimmered in shades of blue that barely seemed real. At Charlotte Bay, snow fell gently, turning the landscape into a living watercolor. Whales surfaced nearby—powerful yet calm—moving through the water as if time itself slowed in their presence.

And then there were the penguins.

Gentoo, adelie, and chinstrap—awkward and comical on land, astonishingly graceful in the water. Watching them waddle across snowy paths, tend their nests, and launch themselves into the sea felt like witnessing joy in its purest form.







When Nature Leads the Way

Antarctica has its own rhythm—and its own rules.

Sailing through the narrow Lemaire Channel, known affectionately as Kodak Crack, felt like threading a needle between towering walls of ice and rock. When an iceberg drifted into our path, our plans changed without hesitation. Down here, nature always leads. We simply follow, humbled and grateful for the experience.





A Final Farewell: Port Lockroy & Damoy Point

Our final day was a gift.

Sunshine warmed the frozen landscape. The air was still. Time felt suspended.

At Port Lockroy, the world’s southernmost operational post office, human history felt small yet meaningful in a place shaped mostly by wind, wildlife, and ice. Later, at Damoy Point, the world grew quiet in the most profound way—the distant crack of shifting ice, the soft calls of nesting gentoo penguins, and long stretches of perfect silence.

I watched male gentoos gather pebbles and carefully deliver them to their partners—tiny gestures of devotion in a vast white world. In that moment, something inside me shifted. Sometimes it’s the smallest scenes that leave the deepest imprint.





Leaving Changed

Now, as we begin the journey back across the Drake Passage, I feel full—grateful, humbled, and changed.

Antarctica wasn’t just my seventh continent.

It was a reminder of how breathtakingly beautiful and fragile our planet is.

A place where silence speaks, where nature reigns, and where wonder comes easily.

This wasn’t just a trip.

It was a gift—

one of stillness, awe, perspective, and deep appreciation.

A chapter etched permanently on my heart, long after the ice fades into the horizon.

Italy had been high on my travel bucket list for years, and when the day finally arrived, it was everything I had imagined—and so much more. From standing inside the Colosseum to wandering the canals of Venice, every stop along the way had its own personality and story to tell.

After flying from Tulsa through Atlanta, we landed in Rome, excited to begin an unforgettable adventure through one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.

Rome – Walking Through Thousands of Years of History

There’s something almost surreal about Rome. Everywhere you turn, you’re surrounded by history. One minute you’re walking down a busy street, and the next you’re standing in front of ruins that are nearly 2,000 years old.

One of the highlights of our time in Rome was visiting the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. No picture can truly prepare you for seeing Michelangelo’s ceiling in person. The amount of detail and artistry is simply incredible, and it’s one of those moments where you just stop, look up, and take it all in.

Of course, seeing the Colosseum was another unforgettable experience. Standing where gladiators once fought and imagining the thousands of spectators who once filled the arena really brings history to life. It’s amazing to think about everything this structure has witnessed over the centuries.

We also explored the Roman Baths and climbed the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta), adding even more depth to our understanding of Rome’s fascinating history.

Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast & Positano – A Day I’ll Never Forget

One of my favorite days of the trip was leaving Rome behind and heading south.

Our first stop was Pompeii, a place that truly makes history come alive. Walking through the ancient streets, seeing homes, shops, and even roads preserved after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It honestly felt like stepping back in time.

From there, we traveled along the breathtaking Amalfi Coast.

Pictures don’t do this drive justice.

The winding roads, dramatic cliffs, sparkling blue water, and colorful villages perched on the hillsides create one of the most beautiful coastlines I’ve ever seen.

We spent time exploring Positano, wandering through its charming streets, browsing local shops, and simply taking in the incredible views. It’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with this part of Italy.



Florence – Where Art Comes to Life

Next, we boarded one of Italy’s high-speed trains and made our way to Florence.

I have to say, traveling by train in Italy is such an easy and relaxing way to get around. Watching the countryside roll by was an experience all by itself.

Florence is absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you look, there’s incredible architecture, beautiful piazzas, and reminders that this city helped shape the Renaissance.

One of the biggest highlights was finally seeing Michelangelo’s David.

I’d seen pictures countless times, but standing in front of the actual sculpture was something completely different. The size, detail, and craftsmanship are truly amazing.

While we were in Florence, we also took a trip to Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower. Yes…we took the classic “holding up the tower” picture! Sometimes you just have to embrace being a tourist.

To finish out our stay, we were able to attend an evening 'Pizza and Gelato Making' Class.  We had a fantastic time and I highly recommend a cooking class of some kind when you visit Italy!



Venice – A City Unlike Anywhere Else

Our next stop was Venice, and honestly, it felt like walking into a storybook.

There are no cars, no buses—just canals, bridges, boats, and beautiful architecture around every corner.

One of my favorite parts wasn’t any specific attraction. It was simply wandering.

Every narrow street seemed to lead to another beautiful canal, hidden square, or charming café. Venice is one of those places where getting a little lost is part of the experience.

Watching gondolas glide through the canals while locals and visitors shared the waterways made me appreciate just how unique this city really is.

It’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever been.



Bologna – Italy’s Hidden Gem

Our final stop was Bologna, and I’ll admit—it ended up being one of my favorite surprises of the trip.

While many travelers head straight for Rome, Florence, or Venice, Bologna has a charm all its own.

The beautiful covered walkways, historic streets, and incredible food made it the perfect place to slow down before heading home.

It felt less crowded than some of Italy’s more famous cities, giving us time to simply enjoy walking, people-watching, and soaking in the local atmosphere.

And yes…the food absolutely lived up to its reputation!

Why Italy Captured My Heart

Looking back, every city gave us something completely different.

Rome amazed us with its history.

Pompeii reminded us just how powerful nature can be.

The Amalfi Coast took our breath away.

Florence inspired us with its art.

Venice felt magical.

And Bologna gave us a chance to slow down and simply enjoy Italy.

That’s what I love most about traveling. Every destination tells a different story, and Italy has countless stories waiting to be discovered.

As a travel advisor, I love helping my clients experience places like this in a way that fits their travel style. Whether you’re dreaming of history, food, art, scenic train rides, or simply wandering through charming streets with a gelato in hand, Italy truly has something for everyone.

This may have been my first visit to Italy…

But I know it definitely won’t be my last.

Some trips are incredible.

And then there are the ones that stay with you long after you’ve come home—because they shift something inside you.

My journey through South Africa, Zanzibar, and Kenya was exactly that.

I expected beautiful landscapes and unforgettable wildlife. What I didn’t expect was how deeply this experience would move me. One moment I was in a vibrant city, the next on a remote safari track, and then suddenly standing on a tropical shoreline that felt like another world entirely. Every day felt like a reminder of just how vast, beautiful, and surprising travel can be.

If Africa has been on your list, I can honestly say—it belongs at the very top.

Cape Town: One of the Most Beautiful Cities I’ve Ever Visited

Cape Town completely stole my heart.

Nestled between the mountains and the sea, it’s one of those cities that feels alive from the moment you arrive. I loved wandering through the V&A Waterfront, watching the harbor come to life, and taking in the incredible views that seemed to be around every corner.

One of my favorite days was exploring the Cape Peninsula. Every twist and turn along the coastline revealed another breathtaking view. We visited charming seaside villages, stood atop dramatic cliffs at Cape Point, and of course, spent time with the adorable African penguins at Boulders Beach. Watching them waddle across the sand was every bit as fun as I imagined.

Cape Town is the kind of destination that surprises you over and over again.



A Day in the Cape Winelands

I’ll admit it—I expected to experience some great wines.

What I didn’t expect was to fall in love with the entire experience.

The Cape Winelands are absolutely stunning. Rolling vineyards stretch toward towering mountains, historic estates welcome you with incredible hospitality, and every meal somehow seems better than the last.

Whether you’re sampling award-winning wines in Stellenbosch, strolling through the charming streets of Franschhoek, or simply soaking in the scenery, this region invites you to slow down and savor every moment.

Even if wine isn’t your favorite, the beauty alone makes this a must-visit.

Safari: A Dream That Somehow Exceeded My Expectations

Nothing—and I truly mean nothing—can prepare you for your first safari.

I had the privilege of staying at both Kapama Private Game Reserve and Ngala Private Game Reserve, and each experience was unforgettable.

Our mornings began before sunrise as we headed into the bush with expert guides and trackers. Every game drive felt like opening a new chapter. Some mornings we watched lions resting beneath the trees. Other drives brought us face-to-face with elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, buffalo, and even elusive leopards.

Seeing the Big Five was incredible, but safari is so much more than checking animals off a list.

It’s watching the sunrise paint the African landscape in shades of gold. It’s hearing nothing but birdsong and the distant call of wildlife. It’s sharing stories around the fire after dinner and realizing you’ve completely lost track of time.

The luxury lodges made the experience even more special. After each game drive, it was wonderful to return to beautiful accommodations, incredible meals, and peaceful moments overlooking the bush.

Safari isn’t just something you do.

It’s something you feel.





Slowing Down in Zanzibar

After the excitement of safari, Zanzibar was exactly what my soul needed.

This beautiful island off the coast of Tanzania is the perfect blend of relaxation, history, and culture.

The beaches are every bit as beautiful as the photos—soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and gentle ocean breezes that make it impossible not to relax.

I also loved exploring Stone Town. Walking through its winding streets, discovering colorful markets, admiring the carved wooden doors, and smelling the island’s famous spices made me feel like I’d stepped into another world.

Whether you’re enjoying fresh seafood by the Indian Ocean or simply watching the sunset over the water, Zanzibar is the perfect ending to an unforgettable safari adventure.



A Close Up Experience I’ll Never Forget

There are bucket-list experiences…

And then there’s the giraffes at Giraffe Manor.

Ending my adventure in Nairobi, Kenya, with a day pass here was something I’ll never forget.

Watching the resident Rothschild’s giraffes stroll up to the where we were standing felt almost surreal. It’s one of those moments where you just have to pause, smile, and soak it all in.

Of course, the photos are incredible, but what makes Giraffe Manor even more special is its commitment to giraffe conservation. Knowing that your stay also supports protecting these beautiful animals makes the experience even more meaningful.



Africa Is So Much More Than I Ever Imagined

When I think back on this journey, it’s impossible to choose just one favorite moment.

It wasn’t just the wildlife.

It wasn’t just the scenery.

It wasn’t just the luxury lodges or the incredible food.

It was the way every destination offered something completely different while somehow fitting together perfectly.

In one unforgettable adventure, I explored one of the world’s most beautiful cities, drove breathtaking coastal roads, met penguins on the beach, sipped incredible South African wines, searched for the Big Five on safari, relaxed on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar, wandered through centuries of history, and shared some fun moments with giraffes in Kenya.

That’s what makes this itinerary so special.

Greece is one of those rare places where every step feels like you’re walking through history. It’s a destination where mythology, ancient civilizations, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture all come together in a way that’s hard to describe until you experience it yourself.

From standing beneath the Acropolis in Athens to wandering the marble streets of Ephesus and watching the sun reflect off the whitewashed villages of Santorini, this journey reminded me why Greece has captured the hearts and imaginations of travelers for centuries.

This wasn’t simply a mom and son vacation—it was an opportunity to experience one of the most influential civilizations in history, one unforgettable stop at a time.

Athens – Where Ancient History Still Stands

After an overnight journey from Tulsa through Atlanta and Amsterdam, we arrived in Athens ready to begin our adventure.

Athens is unlike any city I’ve ever visited. It’s a fascinating blend of modern life and ancient history, where busy streets and neighborhood cafés exist beneath monuments that have watched over the city for more than 2,500 years.

Nothing prepares you for your first glimpse of the Acropolis.

Towering above the city, it’s a powerful reminder of the civilization that shaped philosophy, democracy, architecture, and so much of the Western world. Walking through the ancient pathways and standing beside the Parthenon, it was impossible not to imagine the countless generations who had stood in the very same place.

History doesn’t feel distant in Athens—it feels alive.



Sailing the Aegean Sea

One of my favorite ways to explore Europe is by cruise, and sailing through the Aegean Sea was the perfect way to experience several incredible destinations in one journey.

Each morning brought a new island, a new culture, and another chapter of history waiting to be explored.

Every port had its own personality. Some were filled with ancient ruins, while others welcomed us with picturesque villages, waterfront cafés, and breathtaking coastal scenery. It made every day feel like a brand-new adventure.

Santorini – Beauty Beyond the Photos

You’ve probably seen Santorini on postcards, travel magazines, or social media.

Trust me…

No picture truly captures it.

Perched high above the sparkling Aegean Sea, the island’s whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches, and dramatic cliffs create one of the most iconic views in the world.

We wandered the winding pathways, admired the incredible architecture, and simply soaked in the atmosphere. There wasn’t any rush—Santorini is a place that invites you to slow down, look around, and appreciate every view.

It’s easy to understand why so many travelers dream of visiting this island.



Mykonos – A Different Side of Greece

While Santorini feels dramatic and romantic, Mykonos offers an entirely different experience.

Its maze of narrow streets, colorful doors, charming boutiques, and waterfront cafés make it incredibly fun to explore.

The famous windmills overlooking the harbor have become symbols of the island, but some of my favorite moments came from wandering without a plan.

Every corner seemed to reveal another hidden courtyard, blooming bougainvillea, or inviting café.

Sometimes the best way to experience a destination is simply to get a little lost.



Ephesus – Walking Through an Ancient World

One of the most unforgettable days of our journey was visiting Ephesus.

Although located in present-day Türkiye, Ephesus was one of the most important cities of the ancient Greek and Roman world and remains one of the best-preserved archaeological sites anywhere.

Walking its marble streets felt like stepping back in time.

The magnificent Library of Celsus, the massive amphitheater, ancient temples, and remarkably preserved structures offered an incredible glimpse into daily life thousands of years ago.

Reading about these places in history books is one thing.

Standing where merchants traded, philosophers debated, and early Christianity spread gives you an entirely different appreciation for the people and events that helped shape our world.

It’s one of those places that leaves you speechless.



More Than Beautiful Scenery

Greece certainly delivers unforgettable landscapes, crystal-clear waters, incredible cuisine, and postcard-worthy views.

But what stayed with me long after returning home was something much deeper.

It was the realization that every destination had a story.

Every ruin represented centuries of triumph, innovation, conflict, and resilience.

Every island preserved traditions that have been passed from one generation to the next.

Travel has a remarkable way of turning history from something you read about into something you can actually experience.

And that’s exactly what Greece did.

Disney Magic, Bullet Trains, and Discovering the Heart of Japan ✨

Japan had been on my travel bucket list for years, and it absolutely lived up to every expectation. From world-class Disney parks to peaceful mountain towns, centuries-old temples, and one of the most moving places I’ve ever visited, this trip was one I’ll never forget.

Tokyo Disney Resort – Disney, But Like You’ve Never Experienced Before

After flying from Tulsa through Chicago and finally arriving at Narita Airport, we headed straight to the Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel. Even before stepping into the parks, it was obvious this Disney experience was going to be different.

As someone who has visited Disney parks around the world, I was excited to finally experience what so many Disney fans consider the best Disney resort on the planet.

Tokyo Disneyland

Walking into Tokyo Disneyland felt both familiar and completely new. Instead of Main Street, U.S.A., you’re welcomed by the beautiful World Bazaar, covered with a massive glass canopy that keeps guests comfortable no matter the weather.

One of the absolute highlights of the day was Beauty and the Beast. I’ve ridden a lot of Disney attractions over the years, but this one completely blew me away. The trackless ride system, incredible animatronics, music, and storytelling made it feel like we were actually dancing through the movie alongside Belle and Beast. It’s easily one of my favorite Disney attractions anywhere in the world.

One thing that really stood out throughout the day was the guests. Everyone was so respectful, incredibly patient, and many were dressed in coordinating Disney outfits or character-inspired fashion. The atmosphere felt joyful, organized, and unlike anything I’ve experienced at a U.S. Disney park.



Let’s Talk About the Popcorn!

I know it sounds funny, but popcorn is practically an attraction at Tokyo Disney Resort.

Instead of one or two flavors, every popcorn cart has something different, and people will happily stand in line just to try a new flavor. We found everything from soy sauce and butter to curry, black pepper, honey, and even shrimp popcorn.

Of course, I also had to check out all the adorable collectible popcorn buckets. Disney fans know those are almost as important as the popcorn itself!

Tokyo DisneySea – My Favorite Disney Park in the World

If you’ve ever wondered whether Tokyo DisneySea is worth the trip…

The answer is absolutely YES.

I’ve visited Disney parks across the globe, and DisneySea quickly became one of my all-time favorites. The level of detail is simply incredible. Every land feels like you’ve stepped into an entirely different world.

One of my favorite areas was Mermaid Lagoon. It’s completely indoors and feels like you’ve stepped beneath the ocean into Ariel’s world. The colors, music, and attractions make it feel magical for both kids and adults.

Then there was Fantasy Springs…

This brand-new expansion completely exceeded my expectations. Walking through the worlds of Frozen, Tangled, and Peter Pan felt like walking through the movies themselves.

The highlight for me was Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival. Floating past thousands of glowing lanterns while “I See the Light” played in the background was simply magical. It’s one of those Disney moments that gives you goosebumps.



Leaving Disney…and Beginning Our Japan Adventure

As incredible as Tokyo Disney Resort was, it was only the beginning of our journey.

The next morning we left the magic behind and stepped into another amazing part of Japan—its transportation system.

And honestly…Japan’s train system is an attraction all by itself.

Part 2: Bullet Trains, Hot Springs, Temples & History

One thing I quickly learned is that Japan runs on precision.

From local trains to the famous Shinkansen bullet trains, everything operates almost perfectly on time. Once you get the hang of the stations and transfers, it’s surprisingly easy to travel throughout the country.

Hakone – Slow Down and Relax

After the excitement of Disney, Hakone was exactly what we needed.

We stayed at the beautiful Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora, surrounded by mountains and fresh air. Everything immediately felt calmer.

One experience I had been looking forward to was visiting an onsen. Soaking in the natural hot spring waters after several busy days of sightseeing was incredibly relaxing and gave us the chance to slow down and simply enjoy the moment.

We also visited Owakudani, the volcanic valley famous for its black eggs. These eggs are cooked in the naturally sulfur-rich hot springs, turning the shells completely black. Legend says eating one adds seven years to your life. Whether that’s true or not, I couldn’t pass up trying one!



Kyoto – Stepping Back in Time

From Hakone we continued on to Kyoto, and the entire atmosphere changed once again.

Tokyo is modern and energetic.

Kyoto is peaceful, historic, and full of incredible traditions.

Everywhere we turned there were beautiful temples, quiet gardens, shrines, and streets that looked like they hadn’t changed for centuries.

Walking through the thousands of bright red torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine was every bit as amazing as I’d imagined. The further we walked, the quieter everything became, making it one of the most peaceful experiences of the trip.

The stunning Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) almost looked unreal as it reflected perfectly across the water.

One evening we wandered through Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha district. The narrow streets, traditional wooden buildings, and lantern-lit alleyways made it feel like stepping into another time.

And of course, no visit to Kyoto would be complete without seeing the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Standing beneath the towering bamboo was such a unique experience and one I’ll always remember.

Hiroshima – A Place That Stays With You

One of the most meaningful days of our trip was our visit to Hiroshima.

Walking through Peace Memorial Park and visiting the Peace Memorial Museum is something I believe everyone should experience at least once.

It’s difficult to put into words the emotions you feel while walking through the exhibits. Reading personal stories, seeing the artifacts, and learning more about the events of 1945 was heartbreaking, powerful, and deeply moving.

This wasn’t simply another sightseeing stop.

It was a reminder of how important peace truly is and how resilient people can be in the face of unimaginable tragedy.



Looking Back

When I think about Japan, I don’t think about just one experience.

I think about watching lanterns float with Rapunzel.

I think about racing across the countryside on a bullet train.

I think about soaking in an onsen while looking at the mountains.

I think about walking beneath thousands of torii gates.

And I think about standing silently in Hiroshima, reflecting on history and the importance of never forgetting.

Japan is one of those destinations that has something for everyone—Disney magic, incredible food, breathtaking scenery, rich culture, and history that leaves a lasting impact.

It’s a country that continually surprises you, and I know this won’t be my last visit.

Banff National Park: A Nature Lover's Paradise: Flying into Calgary, we quickly rented a car and made our way to the picturesque resort town of Banff, nestled in the heart of Banff National Park. Established in 1885 as Canada's first national park and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Banff boasts awe-inspiring mountain scenery and a myriad of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. From hot springs to snow skiing in winter and hiking, shopping, and wildlife spotting in summer, this charming town has something for everyone. We delighted in exploring the downtown area, treating ourselves to a delicious meal at the renowned Grizzly House Restaurant, and relishing the cozy ambiance while savoring French Onion soup and Sirloin Burgers.

Emerald Waters and Alpine Luxury: Lake Louise and Fairmont Château Lake Louise: Continuing our journey westward, we were greeted by the mesmerizing emerald waters of Lake Louise. The serene beauty of the lake beckoned us to embark on a scenic hike, immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the surroundings. Our accommodation for the night was the prestigious Fairmont Château Lake Louise, an alpine luxury resort that perfectly harmonizes with the breathtaking nature surrounding it. From skating and skiing to hiking and rejuvenating in the lap of luxury, this grand retreat offered a gateway to unforgettable experiences. We marveled at the variety of hiking trails, observed wildlife in their natural habitat (while taking necessary precautions), and relished the enchanting beauty of the Bow Valley. While the more adventurous can undertake the 6.4-mile hike to the Plain of Six Glaciers, we opted for a pleasant and easy 3-mile walk along the lake, culminating in the sight of a small glacier.

Victoria: A Blend of History and Natural Splendor: Leaving the Canadian Rockies behind, we flew to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, located on Vancouver Island. Victoria's abundant parkland and temperate weather create the perfect environment for stunning gardens and beautiful landscapes. The city's British colonial past is reflected in its Victorian architecture, exemplified by the stately Craigdarroch Castle mansion. We took a moment to admire this architectural gem before checking in at the Fairmont Empress, a historic waterfront hotel known as the 'Castle of the Pacific.' With its classic and contemporary blend, the hotel offered picturesque views of float planes, boats, and migrating whales. Our tour of Victoria took us to Hatley Castle, a magnificent structure, and Butchart Gardens, a paradise boasting 55 acres of vibrant floral displays and water features. We also explored Chinatown, the second oldest in North America, and wandered through the narrow and charming Fan Tan Alley.

Vancouver: A City of History and Vibrant Energy: Our final stop before embarking on an Alaskan cruise was the dynamic city of Vancouver. We boarded a BC Ferry and crossed the Strait of Georgia to reach this cosmopolitan hub. Vancouver's rich history unfolded as we participated in an evening tour that explored the city's lost souls and delved into the stories of Gastown, the original name of the town before its renaming. We marveled at the steam-powered clock and soaked in the city's atmosphere. Despite opting for Rosedale Condos for our accommodation, we indulged in a tasty meal at Meat and Bread, a renowned eatery featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Vancouver's iconic Lions Gate Bridge, connecting the city to Stanley Park, and its cinematic appeal left a lasting impression on us.

Conclusion: A Journey Filled with Wonder and Natural Splendor: As we reflect on our Canadian adventure, we are filled with gratitude for the majestic beauty we witnessed, the history we explored, and the warm hospitality we experienced. From the grandeur of Banff National Park to the elegance of Fairmont Château Lake Louise, the charm of Victoria, and the vibrancy of Vancouver, Canada surpassed our expectations. Discovering Iceland's Marvels: A Journey to Diamond Beach and Beyond

Diamond Beach: A Shimmering Gem on the South Coast: Our journey continued at Diamond Beach, also known as Breiðamerkursandur. Located on Iceland's south coast, this beach is renowned for its striking black sand and sparkling icebergs that wash up on the shore. The icebergs, resembling glistening diamonds, create a mesmerizing sight against the contrasting dark sands. Adjacent to the beach lies the magnificent Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where a colossal glacier looms, showcasing nature's grandeur. As we strolled along the beach, we were treated to the sight of diverse birdlife and playful seals, gracefully navigating through the icebergs. The glacial blue hues of the icebergs added a touch of ethereal beauty to this already enchanting landscape.

Glacial Marvels: Svínafellsjökull Glacier and Beyond: Leaving Diamond Beach, we embarked on a scenic drive back towards Vik, our base for the night. En route, we made a captivating stop at Svínafellsjökull Glacier. As an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap, Svínafellsjökull offered a glimpse into the immense forces of nature. While exploring this icy wonderland, we were fortunate enough to witness a portion of the glacier calving. The thunderous sound of ice breaking off echoed through the air, leaving us in awe of nature's raw power. We ventured onto a small section of the glacier, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, and immersed ourselves in the serenity of the surroundings.

Equine Connections: Icelandic Horses and their Endearing Nature: Icelandic horses, with their gentle demeanor and captivating beauty, hold a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors. During our journey, we had the pleasure of encountering these wonderful creatures. Jordan, in particular, formed an instant bond with these sweet and friendly horses, forging a connection that reminded us of the unique interactions one can have with animals when exploring new destinations.

Puffin Spotting and Tranquil Nights: As evening approached, we ventured to Reynisdrangar, a collection of three rock formations rising majestically from the ocean near Reynisfjara beach in Vik. This mystical setting provided the perfect backdrop for our puffin spotting adventure. Puffins, with their distinctive appearance and charming antics, had spent the day at sea fishing and returned to land in the evening. Patiently waiting until 9:00 pm, we were rewarded with glimpses of these adorable and elusive seabirds, which added a touch of magic to our trip. Our overnight stay at the Farmhouse Lodge, nestled in the picturesque countryside, was nothing short of delightful. The cozy accommodations, complete with a small kitchen area, and the stunning views made it a memorable experience.

Journey to the Volcanic Core: Rútshellir Cave and Fagradalsfjall Volcano: On our final day in Iceland, we embarked on a volcanic adventure. First, we made a fascinating stop at Rútshellir Cave, believed to be Iceland's largest man-made cave and possibly the oldest. The cave's historical significance and the attached sheepcote, reminiscent of a Turf House, transported us back in time, offering a glimpse into the rich and captivating history of the region.

Our ultimate destination was Fagradalsfjall Volcano, also known as Beautiful Valley Mountain. This incredible volcano is home to two erupted volcanoes, Geldingadalir in 2021 and Meradalir in 2022. The journey to the volcano was filled with anticipation, and as we approached, we witnessed the steaming lava in certain areas, a reminder of the fiery nature of Iceland's geology. Hiking for 6 kilometers, we finally reached Meradalir, the culmination of our volcanic exploration. The sight of these eruptive forces, set against the backdrop of Iceland's rugged landscapes, was truly a dream come true, fulfilling a long-held bucket list experience.

Conclusion: Awe-inspiring Memories and Farewell: As we conclude our Icelandic adventure, we find ourselves at Hotel Jazz near the airport, reflecting on the extraordinary experiences that have filled our last few hours here. From the mesmerizing beauty of Diamond Beach and the grandeur of glacial wonders to the encounters with Icelandic horses, elusive puffins, and the thrill of witnessing a volcanic eruption, this trip has been nothing short of epic. This vast ice cap, the second largest in Iceland, dominates the west of the Icelandic interior, standing proudly in the Highlands. En route, we were greeted by the charming Icelandic horses, a breed unique to the country. Join us as we delve into our thrilling glacier adventure and immerse ourselves in the wonders of nature.

Icelandic Horses: Small, Hardy, and Beloved: Before reaching our glacier destination, we were captivated by the sight of Icelandic horses grazing in the countryside. These sturdy and endearing creatures are the only horse breed in Iceland, owing to strict laws prohibiting the import of horses and the return of exported animals. Despite their small stature, Icelandic horses are known for their resilience and longevity, embodying the spirit of this rugged land.

'Into the Glacier' Adventure: Unveiling the Glacier's Secrets: Arriving at Haukadalur, we eagerly joined the 'Into the Glacier' tour, brimming with anticipation for the adventure that awaited us. Our journey began with a thrilling monster truck ride, traversing the icy expanse and ascending onto the glacier. Bundled up in our warmest attire, we took each step with excitement, ready to explore the heart of the Langjökull Glacier.

Stepping into the Glacier's Realm: As we set foot on the glacier, our experienced guides led us to a remarkable man-made ice cave, the largest of its kind in the world. This ethereal ice tunnel allowed us to delve deep into the glacier's frozen realm, unveiling its hidden wonders. Inside, we marveled at the intricate network of crevasses and waterways, witnessing different layers of the glacier that bore the weight of history and time.

Learning and Adventure in Harmony: The 'Into the Glacier' tour provided us with a wealth of knowledge about glaciers and their mesmerizing formations. A Spiritual Start at Hallgrimskirkja: Our exploration began with a visit to the impressive Hallgrimskirkja cathedral, a towering masterpiece that dominates the city skyline. Standing in awe of its architectural grandeur, we entered the serene space and lit a candle for our loved ones. In quiet contemplation, we took a moment to reflect and offer prayers. The cathedral's tranquil atmosphere provided a peaceful start to our day of adventure.

Rainbow Road and Vibrant Shopping: After our spiritual experience, we strolled along the lively Rainbow Road, immersing ourselves in the vibrant energy of the city. The street was lined with charming shops and boutiques, offering a delightful array of local crafts, souvenirs, and unique treasures. We couldn't resist indulging in a bit of retail therapy, capturing the essence of Reykjavik in our purchases.

The Solfar 'Sun Voyager' and Natural Discoveries: Our journey continued to the Solfar, a captivating work of art resembling a Viking longship made of steel. Standing by the picturesque waterfront, we marveled at its beauty, capturing photographs to forever remember this remarkable sight. As we ventured along the coast, we stumbled upon an opportunity for rock stacking, a meditative practice that allowed us to connect with nature and appreciate the delicate balance of the stones.

Our path then led us to the Grotta Lighthouse, where we reveled in the breathtaking views of the coastline. The shore was adorned with sea kelp, evidence of the wild ocean's embrace. Amidst this coastal wonderland, we were fortunate to witness Eider ducks tending to their adorable ducklings, a heartwarming sight that further deepened our connection with Iceland's abundant wildlife.

Lava Caving and Volcano Encounter: Thrilled for more adventure, we set out for the Leiðarendi Lava Cave, nestled in a lava field near the Blue Mountains. With anticipation, we explored the mysterious underground passages, marveling at the intricate formations shaped by ancient volcanic activity. The cave's dark beauty and otherworldly atmosphere left us in awe of nature's creative power.

Emboldened by our lava cave experience, we embarked on an impromptu decision to hike part of the magnificent Thríhnúkagígur Volcano. Though we chose to admire its grandeur from the outside this time, we were captivated by the knowledge that it is the only volcano on Earth that allows exploration of its inner chambers. Thríhnúkagígur's dormant state and its last eruption over 4,000 years ago inspired a sense of awe and respect for the natural forces that shape our planet.

Embracing the Midnight Sun: As evening approached, we marveled at the extended daylight hours in Iceland during this time of year. Sunset was scheduled for a mesmerizing 11:35 PM, immersing the landscape in hues of gold and amber. Equipped with blackout curtains and sleep masks, we welcomed the opportunity to rest and recharge, ready for the adventures that awaited us in the days ahead.

Conclusion: Day two in Iceland exceeded our wildest expectations, as we immersed ourselves in the wonders of Reykjavik.

A Refreshing Start to our Icelandic Adventure: Blue Lagoon and Reykjavik

Introduction: We made it to Iceland! After enduring a 24-hour journey, the excitement of exploring this enchanting country fueled our spirits. Our first destination was the world-renowned Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa nestled in the mesmerizing lava fields of southwestern Iceland. With its milky blue waters brimming with natural minerals, we knew we were in for a rejuvenating experience.

Relaxation amidst Nature's Marvels: After enduring the long hours of travel, our visit to the Blue Lagoon was a much-needed respite. Despite the rainy weather and chilly 44-degree temperatures outside, we immersed ourselves in the warm, inviting waters. It was a delightful experience, spending ample time luxuriating in the tranquil ambience of the spa. The gentle rainfall added to the soothing atmosphere, creating an oasis of calm in the midst of nature's beauty.

Indulging in Silica Masks and Surrendering to Serenity: Within the Blue Lagoon's tranquil embrace, we took the opportunity to pamper ourselves with a rejuvenating silica mask. The therapeutic properties of the mineral-rich waters worked wonders on our skin, leaving us feeling refreshed and invigorated. With no rush or hurry, we relished the serenity and downtime, allowing ourselves to fully unwind and escape the stresses of everyday life.

With its convenient location and tranquil surroundings, the Grand Hotel Reykjavik became our home away from home during our Icelandic adventure.
