Adventure Awaits: Our Family Journey Through Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands
Embarking on an Adventures by Disney expedition to Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands was a dream come true for our family. Over the course of nine days, we explored breathtaking landscapes, uncovered the secrets of volcanic islands, and immersed ourselves in the incredible wildlife that inspired Charles Darwin. Come along as we share the highlights of this unforgettable journey!
Day 1: Arrival in Quito, Ecuador
¡Bienvenidos a Ecuador!When we touched down at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, we were immediately greeted by a friendly Adventures by Disney representative holding a bright orange sign. It was such a warm welcome and set the tone for the adventure ahead. From there, we headed to the Wyndham Quito Airport Hotel, which was both cozy and full of Ecuadorian charm.
After checking in, we had the evening to ourselves. Some of us stayed at the hotel to relax, while others ventured out to explore Quito. The Adventure Guides had plenty of great recommendations for experiencing the city’s vibrant culture and delicious cuisine.
Day 2: Off to the Galápagos – Baltra & Mosquera Islet
After a leisurely breakfast, we were off to Baltra Island. The flight itself felt like the beginning of the adventure, as we anticipated what was waiting for us in the Galápagos. Once we arrived, we took a scenic panga boat ride to the
Galápagos Legend, which would be our floating home for the next six days.
Mosquera Islet Snorkeling & HikeOur first stop was Mosquera Islet, where we snorkeled in crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. It was incredible to swim alongside rays, barracudas, and even sharks! Later, we took a guided hike and saw playful sea lions and exotic birds.
That evening, we enjoyed a welcome reception and dinner onboard. The kids loved the evening activities, which included stargazing and family-friendly games.
Day 3: Santiago Island & Rábida Island
Santiago Island: Egas Port Walk & SwimAfter a hearty breakfast, we stepped onto Santiago Island’s black volcanic sands. The kids were fascinated by the fur seals, blue footed boobies, lava lizards, and the majestic Galápagos hawk. After exploring, we cooled off with a refreshing swim before heading back to the ship for lunch.
Rábida Island: Walk & SnorkelRábida Island, with its stunning red-sand beach, was one of our favorite stops. We spotted mockingbirds, finches, and the vibrant vermilion flycatcher. Snorkeling here was magical—we swam alongside turtles, sea lions, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fish.
Day 4: Isabela Island
Urbina Bay & Alcedo VolcanoOur hike across the dramatic volcanic terrain at Urbina Bay was like stepping onto another planet. Depending on the season, we were told you could spot land iguanas and giant tortoises—something we were lucky enough to witness! We wrapped up the morning with snorkeling in turquoise waters.
Tagus Cove AdventuresIn the afternoon, we followed in Darwin’s footsteps at Tagus Cove. Some of us chose to kayak while others snorkeled, surrounded by penguins, turtles, and flightless cormorants.
Day 5: Fernandina Island & Isabela Island
Espinosa Point ExplorationFernandina Island is a pristine paradise and home to the world’s largest colony of marine iguanas. It felt like nature at its purest. Snorkeling here, we swam alongside iguanas, penguins, and turtles.
Vicente Roca PointWe took a panga ride along the dramatic coastline of Vicente Roca Point, spotting Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, and flightless cormorants. The kids loved seeing so many unique birds up close!
Day 6: Santa Cruz Island
Charles Darwin Research StationVisiting the Charles Darwin Research Station was both fascinating and inspiring. We learned about the conservation efforts protecting the Galápagos’ unique species. The kids were especially intrigued by the story of Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island tortoise.
Highlands AdventureOur afternoon in the highlands was unforgettable. We visited Rancho El Manzanillo, where we saw giant tortoises roaming freely. It felt like stepping into a prehistoric scene! We enjoyed a delicious lunch surrounded by lush landscapes and beautiful birdlife.
Day 7: Bartolomé Island & Santiago Island
Bartolomé Island Hike & SnorkelWe started the day hiking Summit Trail for one of the most iconic views in the Galápagos—volcanic cones and Pinnacle Rock. Afterward, we cooled off with a snorkel, where playful penguins and sea lions joined us in the water.
Santiago Island’s Sullivan BayThe lava fields of Sullivan Bay were a striking reminder of the islands’ volcanic origins. We ended the day snorkeling in this otherworldly setting, marveling at the vibrant underwater life.
Day 8: San Cristóbal Island
Pitt Point & Cerro BrujoOur last full day was packed with adventure. We took a panga ride along San Cristóbal’s beautiful coastline and hiked to see all three booby species—blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca boobies. In the afternoon, we relaxed on Cerro Brujo beach, where the kids played in the soft sand while we snorkeled in the turquoise waters.
Farewell DinnerThat evening, we celebrated our incredible journey with a farewell dinner under the stars. Sharing stories and laughter with our fellow travelers was the perfect way to end this magical trip.
Day 9: Goodbye to the Galápagos
After a leisurely breakfast, we said goodbye to the
Galápagos Legend and flew back to Quito. As we headed home, we couldn’t stop talking about the memories we’d made—memories that will stay with us forever.
Tips for Future Travelers
- Pack light, with quick-dry clothing for island excursions.
- Bring water-resistant hiking shoes for the volcanic terrain.
- Don’t forget sunscreen and a hat—the Galápagos sun is intense!
- A waterproof camera and binoculars are a must for capturing all the incredible wildlife.
This wasn’t just a trip for our family—it was a journey into one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth. From volcanic landscapes to swimming with sea lions and learning about conservation, this adventure left us with memories we’ll cherish for a lifetime.
